Supervisor Meeting Supervisor Meeting 4

This week I have been focusing on the papers we discussed in Supervisor Meeting 4.

Generational differences between the baby boomers and the generations X and Y.

Bridging the Gap: Boomer Librarians Lure Millennial Students To The Library.

This paper described how the library at the Curtin University of Technology has changed its' environment to suite the needs and trends of the Generation Y students (described as Millennial Students). The work they have done has been described as "adapting traditional services to new technology".

In particular, they focused on the fact the the library staff were aging, and that this was a breed of "succession planning", which I think will also relate to my dissertation, as the workforce is aging and the senior management in any organisation will have to do some work in this area in the next 5 - 7 years.

As description of the baby boomer generation is given as:

"competitive, political and hard-working.......importance placed on progression at work, the title of their position and the size of their office.....have a sense of living now and not for the future.....sometimes characterised as the 'me' generation"

The Millennial Genration (Generation Y) is described also:

"born between 1979 and 2000....techno-literate, purposed and multi-tasking...continuously wired, plugged-in and connected....living in a globalised world with 24/7 digital connectivity..expecting intellectual challenge with high eductational expectations....socially well connected....expecting customisation....utilising new communication modes...described as the 'us' generation, being used to continuous communication with their peers"

Bridging the gap is a task that by needs must fall to the older generation.
